The importance of self-care for social workers

Self-care is extremely important for social workers, a field that has the potential for burnout. Recognizing this, self-care was added to the social work code of ethics a few years ago as a requirement. However, many social workers are frustrated with the lack of practical and systemic support to realistically prioritize their self-care.

This is where the NCSCSW can help bridge the gap by providing self-care resources, organizing self-care based events, and promoting community care.

Community care is just as vital as self-care, and the two often go hand in hand. Self-care isn’t merely about bubble baths and getting enough sleep; these are the bare minimum of taking care of oneself. True self-care involves engaging in joyful experiences and activities that connect you with your identity. Community care is crucial in this aspect because having a community of peers who understand your unique struggles can make you feel seen and supported in ways that even family and friends may not.

Our member and community area is designed to be a helpful resource in this regard. Here, members can casually ask for advice, share resources, and vent to one another. This space fosters a sense of belonging and mutual support, which is essential for both personal and professional well-being. Through these connections, we hope to create a supportive network that makes self-care a more practical and integral part of your daily life.
